Because it would be fun.

You come to the checkout counter, there's a smiling dog on the other side wearing a vest with the store's logo.

You scan your items, pay with your card, bag your items and you're done. If you run into problems, a buzzer goes off and the dog, trained to react to the buzzer, barks. A human comes over and helps.

If everything goes as planned, a little bell dings signifying the transaction is complete and the dog smiles and wags his tail.

I'm talking real trained dogs here not robots which would be pointless.

This would work really well so long as none of your items were remotely edible. Or socks. Or tissue paper. Or hand cream. Or anything with an interesting smell.

OTOH, maybe I just haven't trained my dog well.

They could also bark at people who ran out without paying. Technically you could have them bite shoplifters but that might be too much.

You even give the robot money!

//The entire self checkout area is one big robot and you’re just a cog in the machine, executing instructions.//

But in this case with a dog.

How about a snake checkout? The mouth is in the shop, and the tail of each snake extends out into the parking lot. The snake ingests your groceries, scans the barcodes and, once payment is made, peristalses them through and excretes them straight into your car.

Small children could be put through for fun, unless they were wearing clothing with black-and-white stripes.

That might run into some problems.
