As nightime illuminated drone aerial displays become more and more incredible, there are those that are saying these will replace fireworks displays causing some controversy. "Massive explosions being replaced by thousands of little buzzing lights? No thanks."
So there's a basic flaw in the logic
of saying you can't have fireworks displays at the same time as the drones because some of the drones might be blown out of the sky. Let's look at the pros and cons:
Cons: Drones flying in formations meant to match, frame, be chorographed with and dance around massive explosions might get blown out of the sky.
Pros: Drones flying in formations meant to match, frame, be chorographed with and dance around massive explosions might get blown out of the sky.
Put it this way, you as a consumer have your choice of 3 shows, fireworks display only, drone light show only, or drone light show flying around massive aerial explosions. Is there anybody on Earth that wouldn't chose the third?
As to how you'd keep the drones from all getting blown up? You'd use the following method: Figure it out. Once you've done that, enjoy the crowd's cheers when the occasional mishap occurs. I'd even add flares that emitted fire and smoke when a drone got hit so it would put on one last show as it tumbled out of the sky.
But you could prevent much of this (if you even wanted to) because the drones themselves would be releasing the fireworks to detonate in very precise locations by dropping them from strings that trigger them when they reach the desired point of detonation, so we're talking about detonation points accurate to within a few feet. Actually wireless communication between the drones and fireworks would probably be easier and just as accurate.

Description (displayed with the short name and URL.)
||Except for your last paragraph of the drones themselves releasing the fireworks, concurrent drone+fireworks displays have been done (link).
||In The first several paragraphs you describe something you think would be cool - but its been done. Then you suggest launching fireworks directly from the drones - is that the MAIN thing you want to do?
||Im not sure if anyone has ever put on a show that way, but Wired ran an article on the at least part of the concept (linked).
||Edit to add: Actually, there are a lot of youtube vids of people launching fireworks from drones. But I havent found any yet of large scale, professional displays..
||Good timing on this idea.
Guy Fawkes would have had a much easier job if he could've just arranged a drone strike.
you want the drones to fly as close as possible to the explosions - maybe get blown up themselves or maybe not - as part of the excitement. Anything else Im missing?
