EnDhowment fund

Seeing as nobody understands the financial market, it might be an idea to keep an eye on the small-traders, to get some idea of what is actually going on in the world of trade, ie dhows.

I propose a system to monitor dhows and their cargoes in order to get some idea of which way the world economy is going, probably best off-shored to Wales, where it might be called the Dhow-Jones index.

As some kind of real-time monitoring between nations would be good, a P2P network might suffice. After a quick trial in the House of Lords, it does seem to work and will be rolled out at relevant piers.

Predictably, dhows themselves will become another market, and so EnDhowment funds will be created.

Being a dhow owner seems like being a pirate, but with more curry and no actual piracy, but it can't be helped.

If this idea were extended to cover Chinese shipping, would it constitute dealing in Junk bonds ?
8th of 7, Jul 24 2014

Early documents about dhows sail arrangement are a little hard to follow, being in lateen.

As for junk bonds, be your own guest...

As a formal treatise on the economic of dhows I refer you to "Dhows and the Colonial Economy of Zanzibar, 1860-1970" by Gilbert, Erik

For example "Ironically, the mangrove trade peaked in the 1950s with the first flush of the oil wealth in the Persian Gulf. Up to a quarter of a million mangrove poles were exported from Zanzibar alone in a single year, presumably to build traditional houses there, most of them shipped in the monsoon dhows."

Which was good business until concrete came along, so the dhows acted as microcosm of the greater global economy, fuelled by the oil wealth in the gulf states, classic case of boom and bust market....

I did an economics degree (very badly).

To take this idea any further you'd have to be dinghy. But then you canoe I was going to say that.

Mast you keep on with this sheet? Or am I mizzen something? Perhaps that was too stern.

There's a whole raft of these puns available you know. A hull lot of them.
normzone, Jul 24 2014

Yes, but most of them are pretty ropey. We'd rudder you didn't repeat them, even if there are moor where they came from - we anchor after something better.

I sea what you mean - some of these are strong enough that you can bilge on them, while others some people just tack on to what's already here.

If I could just stick my oar in...some of these ideas need a pier review. If knot, they could just be a load of rowlocks.

       //I'm bailing out.

       Are you Shu'ai about that?

As Basil Brush said when he saw two medium sized dhows "Boum Boum" and that's how he got his catchphrase.

Ironically, he was talking to a dhowager duchess at the time, truth is stranger than fiction sometimes.
