I live in San Francisco. One of the BIGGEST headaches of living here is the lack of parking for residents. It's not unusual for me to have to drive around for 30 to 45 minutes each evening just so I can find a parking space in the same zip code where I live.

However, there are a number of "spaces" that could be available to us weary parkers if home owners would rent their garage fronts to their neighbors. For example, on my street alone there are 6 private homes with garages. Two of the garages are double (side by side) garages. Each of the single garage spaces take up the space that could allow at least one street car space. The one's with double garages take up two potential street parking spots.

My idea is to make arrangements with the home owners so that they could rent the space in front of their home to those of us on the street who can never find parking.

I, as the renter, would agree to be available to move my car at any time of the day or night so that the home owner could pull their car out of the garage. Duplicate car keys could be given to the home owner to avoid any problems.

The home owner would be able to parlay what was once just empty space in front of their home into valuable real estate that car owning apartment dwellers, such as myself, would gladly pay for.

One of the many sites already doing this in the London area. [zen_tom, May 07 2007]

Another such website - I know about these because I was talking to someone about it the other day, but a cursory Google search should have provided you with similar results. [zen_tom, May 07 2007]

Makes a lot of sense to me. I wonder if this would be illegal, though... seems like there might be some law on the books about keeping driveways clear.

I seem to recall something a while ago about someone getting a ticket for leaving their car parked (on the street) in front of their own driveway; could just be an urban myth, but in this age of bureaucracy gone mad, it's more than likely true...

Rather than making yourself available to move the car, you could have a spare set of keys cut that you give to the residents. Alternatively you could invent some kind of machinery that would lift your car out of the way whenever the garage door opens. That would be far more half-baked.

Is this space in your neighbor's driveway? If so, why not ask your neighbors if you can rent that space?
