Hydro power recovery

Use pressure energy in effluents to generate power

To produce high quality makeup water for high pressure boilers water demineralization ion exchangers are used. These are regenerated regularly after certain period using filtered water, hydrochloric acid and caustic soda. The activity lasts for quite long time, water discharge pressure & flow rate are sufficient to generate power. It is proposed to make portable micro hydro turbines out of corrosion resistant materials e.g. TEFLON and pass effluents through it before going to drain trench. Suitable inverters and battery chargers can be selected for charging battery. DC batteries can be used for powering DC lighting lamps in most of the parts of the factory. Approximate formula for power generation = 5fH where f = fluid flow rate in m3/sec, H=available heaed in metre.

Sorta sounds reasonable except that I have no idea how much water volume and pressure are available as described in the system. How long would it take for the system to pay for itself? Would extracting kinetic energy from the discharge cause problems with any downstream processes?

How "micro" is micro? Why portable?

Would you mind running that formula by me again?
5fH yields what, in terms of electrical generation, a watt, a horsepower?

Don't think Teflon will be up to making turbine blades - it is just too soft. Maybe inconel, hastelloy, titanium or something other generally unreactive would be better. A bigger question would be whether the energy recovery would be worthwhile. What percentage of the high pressure boiler output do you think you could capture from this system?

HALF - Water volume varies from 10~50 cu.metre/hour, head varies between 5~35 metre during various activities of rinsing, back washing etc.; there would be no downstream problems as effluent is discharged in open trench. Micro means generation capacity ranging from 100W~few Kilowatt. Portable to save cost as all ion exchangers are not regenerated simultaneously - turbine can be shifted near each ion exchanger when required. 5fH mentioned in units earlier yields power in kilowatt.

SUCTIONPAD - Fluid is effluent under certain pressure at ambient temperature. Regarding material, as suggested by you can be definitely tried, thanks.

The basic idea is to capture energy being wasted invariably during regular regenration of ion exchangers. Battery charging system would ensure energy storagee irrespective of the time of the day. DC lighting can be used during night time.

Thanks very much Neelandan for proper guidance. I hope, by name you could make out that we belong to the same country.

Thanks for the answers, [vedarshi]. Another question: would the additional back pressure cause any problems with the main process that is happening upstream?
half, Mar 04 2004

There would be no back pressure, provided turbine shaft is not jammed. Even if little back pressure is there, it won't be harmful for process upstream.
