As you may or may not be aware the Outer Hebrides currently are experiencing problems with an explosion in HedgeHog population. The fact that they have decided to cull 5000 has been front page news and many people have protested at the cruelty of it. The alternative is which has been quoted at £250 per hedgehog.

I propose that all those opposed to the culling of said hedgehogs should be prepared to pay the £250 for capture and then be mailed said hedgehog to look after.

Hedgehogs were introduced... http://www.itv.com/news/Front2092991.html
"...by one resident to control garden pests." This is the sort of jiggery-pokery that hardens the attitudes of natives of the Isles against these incomers. Are you local? [my face your, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 21 2004]

The hedgehogs have apparently won a reprieve http://www.bbc.co.u...ure/hedgehogs.shtml

Baked Hedgehogs http://www.abc.net....stories/s486635.htm
...may or may not be a complete myth, according to Google. In the meantime, here is a traditional Australian recipe which has the advantage of not requiring any hedgehogs. [Nick@Nite, Oct 21 2004]

Why not? It seemed to work for the population explosion of brides in Russia.

I'm sure there are hedgehog shortages in more densely populated countries (I think they tend to become roadkill fairly often)

how on earth did they get over there in the first place? can they swim?
po, Dec 18 2002

hedgehogs are adorable and i'm all for this idea, but these are wild hedgehogs. i wonder how difficult if would be to tame a wild hedgehog. also, what are the possibilities of disease?
screwdriverqueen, Dec 18 2002

       wild, they are livid.
po, Dec 18 2002

       nah, they swim.
po, Dec 18 2002

they were actually introduced earlier in the century to keep the population of slug/worm etc down i think.

the last paragraph was a small rant at those environmentalists that only concern themselves with cute adorable species. ugly species require protection too!
jambo, Dec 18 2002

Maybe they should have sold slugs earlier instead of introducing hedgehogs.
FarmerJohn, Dec 18 2002

so poor ugly slugs, no one cares about them. hey hedgehogs are cute
po, Dec 18 2002

Slugs aren't bad eating. They just need a bit of salt.
