Molded paper pulp hats

Grind paper and mold hats out of it.

Many outdoor festivals and fairs come with lots of sunburn. Also there are frequently craft areas. And booths selling stuff.

I propose that molded pulp could be used to cast fanciful and theme appropriate hats. Molded pulp is usually encountered in drink trays and packaging. It is super cheap. It would be perfect for a short term use hat. One could have stacks of cowboys hats, but also conquistador helmets, derbies and bowlers, boaters, sombreros and so on. Hats are two dimensional in that rarely do they fold back on themselves and so paper pulp would be perfect. They could be sold for a dollar or less. Mimes (with zinka sunblock face paint) could roam around with outrageous hats, placing them atop people who looked like they were getting sunburned. They would be fun to decorate as crafts.

Ramifying this idea: one could have large animal heads intended to be worn as hats, the wearers head fitting into the neck and the animal head extending up and above, carnival style. Again - super cheap, light, and durable enough to last the day. Heads are three dimensional and so would need to be molded in halves then glued together. Dragon heads, giraffe heads and the like could be decorated by event attendees or booth artists, then worn around or taken home as art souvenirs.

Place a layer of cling film on your head, filled one of [bungston's] hats with wet paper mulch and you now have a perfectly form fitted size.

Now, the perforated brass trilby, that's a toughie

Baked they are. The cowboy hats anyway. I wonder if I saw one once and refiled the memory under "my ideas"?

I am leaving this up unless tatterdemalion is going to link the pulp animal heads too.

The traditional English brewster-cap is, of course, dressed in silk with vair awnings and a willow brimrod, but the core of the hat is made of papier maché, varnished to protect it against the steam.

Although you say pulp hats are baked, your idea of having a booth at a fair doesn't seem to be baked! I bunned this because it's a great festival attraction and it would be wonderful to see what other people (other than halfbakers) would come up with. I'd like a Carmen Miranda fruit bowl hat please.

Did not find complete heads but lots of front-of-head mask bits.

// What is this "sun" you refer to? //

We are given to understand that in areas of your planet not known by the designation "Britain", the cloud cover is sometimes thin enough to allow light from your primary to impinge directly on the surface, increasing the level of illumination and causing a rise in air temperature.

Be sure to let everyone know if you observe this rare phenomenon.

The perfect complement to the Moriarty Patent Nose Protector.
