No-fad fad

The end of fashion

Warning: possibly the stupidest idea ever.

It seems that our society consists of one fad after another. When one fad ends, another begins. One day, there should be a fad which says that there are no fads. It will be impossible to end this fad, because to do so would be unfashionable until another fashion takes its place, but no new fashion can begin while it is still fashionable not to have a fashion.

Possibly not what you had in mind, of course... [DrCurry, Oct 04 2004]

Wasn't this Baked by the fad for grunge?

//It will be impossible to end this fad//

Then it's not a fad. What you want is an anti-fad.

Funny - I thought of Brooks Brothers too. And here [Curry] linked them. The fact that I am staring to think like Curry means I have halfbaked quite enough for one day.
bungston, Jul 24 2003

of course you could always *start* fads. my fad for this season is to wear a pair of underpants on my head twisted into an old mrs mop style, with an ostrich feather at a jaunty angle. its cool, really - honest.

I think you've half-baked quite enough for one day, too!

I just *know* x-ray pornography is going to become a fad.

How do I get rich from it when it happens? People just start sending me money, or what?
snarfyguy, Jul 24 2003

       po, that is *so* 1983.
thumbwax, Jul 26 2003

       its cyclical I believe.

skirt levels rise and fall with the economy...

[CrCurry] - what do you mean, grunge was a fashion ?
neilp, Jul 26 2003

If fashion and fads were to stop wouldn't the economy collapse?
Gulherme, Jul 27 2003

But if the fad were that there were no fads, then people following fads would have to not follow fads. If they weren't following the fad to not follow the fad, then they would have to follow a fad. And if the current fad is to have no fads, then following the fad would mean they couldn't follow the fad...

Ahhh, paradox. My brain hurts just thinking about it, [GenYus].

Like [ravenswood] said, though, it has happened before, and will probably keep happening. Someone "influential" decides to be anti-fashion for a while, and anti-fashion typically becomes the new trend. Look at what happened to the punk aesthetic a few years ago!
mawaridi, May 20 2004

People, I have said this before and I will say it again. Fashion is simply a form of ugliness so intolerable we HAVE to alter it every month.

What if nudity becomes fashion? *shudder*

No clothes worn on the catwalk can be worn in everyday life. Just LOOK at it!

Meanwhile, fashion, as I observed, seems to be going backwards. Washed out jeans are making a comeback these days. Anyone still have Go-Go Boots?
Earthborne, Dec 25 2004

       baked - modernism.
benfrost, Dec 27 2004

Nudity will only become a fashion when money can be made from not selling clothes to people. Having said that it is quite popular with me given the right participants
