Bulldog clips can sometimes damage the very documents they are supporting. Large impressions of the clips' equally large jaws are practically a certain fate for any pieces of paper held for an extended period.

Bulldogs are tough and savage (gross generalisation alert); poodles are not. Poodles have soft, curly hair. Thus, line the jaws of a bulldog-style clip with soft, curly fur-like material and prevent damage to papers being held.
