Racing chess is played between any number of competitors. Each competitor has a chess board with only the black pieces on. Each competitor takes it in turn to make one legal move on their board. The winner is the first to get all of their pieces correctly lined up on the far two ranks of squares in the correct order (i.e. in white's starting positions).

A variant: played on a normal board, with both white and black players. The winner is the first to get all of their (remaining) pieces onto the opponent's home places. Moving and taking as usual. Taking the king does not affect the gameplay.

       I like this

An algorithm that delivers the quickest result will quickly be determined, and once learned will be used by everyone. We used to play "give away chess" - a type of sacrfice game where the obejective was to loose pieces. A "method" was descovered that became a type of formula and once this was discovered the game was no fun any more.[+]

Try it and see. The knights can advance first then the pawns with gaps to release the two bishops. Castling will enable the first rook to emerge, and so it goes. It won't take long..... a few minutes I imagine, but too lazy to try.....

Yes this is similar to racing kings, but much more complex I think. And I did consider the existence of an optimum algorithm, but I wondered if there were too many choices to make it easily solvable.

Anyway, a stupid idea, feel free to mfd

I’m waiting for Cress Chess - chess played on a board made up of squares of different coloured live cress plants, with snail-themed pieces

Chessterfield. You play with giant pieces of vulgar furniture modeled with Chesterfield drawer features.
