Starting on 4 August 2014, thousands of young Germans, wearing grey uniforms and helmets with spikes on, and carrying rifles slung over their shoulders, ride their bicycles into france and Belgium from the East.

The french participate in the event by donning shorts, singlets and training shoes, and then running away as fast as possible.

I hold no brief for the French, but I offer this presentation of William Cory's "Ballad for a Borg" because I'm bored with [8th] being beastly to them. [pertinax, Jul 06 2014]

I'm getting this strange feeling of deja vue

I'm just getting a strange feeling period.

I'm getting my period and that feels strange.

       Nice category choice though.

I suppose it's useless to point out that the French soldiers - no thanks to their doctrine - actually fought quite well in 1914, and defeated the Schlieffen Plan with only limited help from the British.

It kind of chose itself, after we discovered there was no category "sport: cycling: schlieffen plan" … it was the nearest to "sport: exercise: equipment: maquis".

// I suppose it's useless to point out that the French soldiers - no thanks to their doctrine //

… and the execrable "Plan XVII" …

//- actually fought quite well in 1914, //

… when they weren't being ordered to retreat by the likes of Lanrezac, leaving the British flank exposed …

// and defeated the Schlieffen Plan with only limited //

       …but crucial …

// help from the British. //
