Sky Cycle or Bronco Rocket

Strap in, hold on, shoot up to 5,000 feet in about 15 seconds, then bail out. Repeat if still alive.

Possibly hydrogen peroxide powered, possibly a steam /turbojet or steam/pulse jet hybrid. After a very fast ride, at apogee, you unstrap yourself and parachute down to earth. An automatic chute on the rocket opens and it floats down to earth as well so both rocket and rider can fuel up and ride again.

The seat would be mounted astride the rocket like a saddle, obviously with a high seat back. A cheap way to do this might be to have a pulse jet that gets it initial velocity using a steam rocket booster stage. This would be practical and cheap using gas for both the jet and to heat the steam. Hydrogen peroxide would probably be too expensive for a sport rocket like this.

Anyway, this would make any other daredevil sport look like a knitting bee.

Not to worry, we already had your name on the dotted line.

And since you share initials with Martin Baker, we thought it appropriate to sign your name to the liability waivers as well.

This would rival the Isle of Man TT for daredevil-ing.

This would rival the Soviet space program for fatality rate.

       You betcha.

I'm wondering if you could make money by doing this once, a-la Evil Knevil's Snake River Canyon jump by televising it. Pay per view maybe?

I could put this together with my fall 5,000 feet into the ocean at full speed without a parachute trick.

       I'll post that later.

// The seat would be mounted astride the rocket like a saddle, obviously with a high seat back //

For the vehicle to travel in a straight line, the axis of thrust has to pass through the centre of gravity. Otherwise, the result will be loops and spins.

There's a very good reason that rockets are the shape and layout they are …

The basic technology seems well baked <link>, just needs substantially bigger engines.

Well, the twenty foot, 30 mile per hour ride version on an ejection seat I suppose. This would be a 5,000 foot 500 mph ride version of that.

But yea, it's basically the ejector seat from hell.
