Helping the Oldies join the Technology Revolution
  [vote for,

It is sad but true that alot of folk don't use email. This is not because they don't want to use it, or even because they don't have a pc...

It is because alot of old people are bloody useless when it comes to learning to use a new piece of technology (even something as simple as email).

There is a way that they can feel involved, by having a piece of software that links (wirelessly? woo) to an sensor on the mailbox in the front door.

Everytime the postie arrives, a window could flash up on the desktop (next to solitaire and word 6) giving a visual indication accompanied by the obligitory "you've got mail" sound file.

Word of advice, get your son/daughter/in laws/trained engineer to install it.

Same idea for PO Boxes. Better use, given that most people, especially oldies, can either see or hear the mail arrive. [DrCurry, Oct 05 2004]

It is not about helping oldies to hear/see the mail arrive, one would assume they know what time the mail is due anyway.

The idea is to let them feel involved. The PO box idea is totally different, so i won't be deleting this just yet...

I believe the reverse is true that the largest growing group of new users is actually the elderly.

OK, perhaps i was a little harsh in suggesting it is the elderly that have problems with technology (although my dad is useless beyond belief with technology). This idea could apply to anyone who cannot use email.

Also could be used by anyone who isn't online.
