With the technology available now, surely it would be feasible to create a pool table with hydraulic legs run by a computer that compensates for the roll of the ocean, so that the surface of the table remains constantly level, thus preventing the balls from moving?! I, for one, on the quick hovercraft ride from Dover to Calais, have been itching for a game of pool, but have always been frustrated.

Or reconsider your view of the situation. [Monkfish, Jun 28 2001, last modified Oct 04 2004]

(This idea could use a more descriptive title. "Sea Snooker", maybe.)

I'll chalk that one up to you, _wiml.

Alternatively, you could just rename the idea and press [OK]...

Seasick passengers could sit on the tables when they're not in use.

You could try suspending a platform large enough for the table and the players -- taking shots while the floor is moving beneath your feet might be trying.

Once it's working, move on to suspending an entire deck. Too many seniors have been forced to make the cruel choice between their passion for cruises and their bocce careers.

Surely a redundant idea for your needs. The hovercraft doesn't run across the channel anymore.

when did that happen(or rather stop happening)?
RobertKidney, Jun 28 2001

Wouldn't work. Couldn't compensate for large linear movements, either major sideways shifts or falls of 8 feet or more (assuming the ceiling's less than say 12 feet high), which can be experienced on smaller boats in high seas.

snooker on a slightly moving table would be a different ballgame altogether but it might be interesting.

po: That game is Bus Snooker, as mentioned above.

The balls would also require a position maintaining mechanism. Say a half inch layer of honey on the table top to dampen movement.
