In Ukraine, many public statues have been wrapped in
heavy padding and plastic sheeting in an effort to
protect them from blast damage inflicted by Putin's
genocidal bomb attacks.
The success of this remains to be seen, but as an act of
global solidarity, I am promoting the idea of all other
countries carrying out the same wrapping action on their
equivalent public statues and other prominent pieces of
sculpture.
Some countries won't do anything that may be seen as
expressing support with Ukraine by delivering weapons
etc, but this is a simple gesture that can gain global
traction and would mean a lot to those enduring the
onslaught of the 21st Century's only world scale
psychopath.
Practically cost free, the wrappings would be easily
removed once Putin has been defeated in a day of
triumphant and celebratory unveiling.

He's not trying to destroy it, he's trying to assimilate it. |
21, tell that to the people being bombed and starved |
I've been watching a lot of news coverage about this topic, from
multiple sources, and I have not seen the word genocide used
anywhere. Nobody is calling it that. |
Ok, so Zelensky is saying it based on a single children's
hospital being struck. According to some of those sources,
the G word has also been hurled AT the Ukrainians by the
Russians. |
As I understand it, those children's hospitals were already
evacuated to underground shelters. Are there even any
kids in them? |
None of the sources I'd seen had used the word genocide.
That was a true statement, and no, I don't agree with
Russia's use of it or Ukraine's. |
Think about the claims being made here: a children's
hospital and maternity ward were "completely destroyed",
but there were only 17 people injured and no deaths? How
is that a genocidal attack? |
"....and now over to 21, Putin's new spokesperson,
who denies that deliberating bombing a maternity
hospital is not part of campaign of genocide" |
21, 3 died including a child. Try watching BBC news. |
Yes - there were women in the middle giving birth.
Regardless of how many were in it, the deliberate
targetting of hospitals is a war crime. Killing newly
born children is genocidal. Foxnews probably can't
deal with genocide as it only includes one letter
from the word golf. |
The support for Trump here was depressing enough
but for Putin!!! If anyone here supports Putin, stay
away from me. There is 100% solidarity for Ukraine
where I live. In fact, one of the very weapons that
is effectively destroying his armoured vehicles is
made here, and thousands of them have been sent.
I cannot engage in combat, but I can express
support for those being attacked by this mad
psycho, and I can try and get that expressed with a
simple gesture like wrapping up public statues. |
I don't watch Fox news or any other right wing sources. But
unless that hospital is filled with people of a specific
religious or ethnic group, it's not GENOCIDE. |
Liberals have a real tough time understanding what certain
words mean. Y'all keep trying to redefine them. Genocide
doesn't mean "was crime". It doesn't mean "mass murder"
or "atrocity". It means ethnic cleansing, and that's not
what's going on in Ukraine. |
To be fair, [21], not everyone on the left side of the aisle is
engaged in the foolish project of trying to lever the world
into shape with a dictionary. Some are, especially in
academia and the fine arts, but not all. |
//lever the world into shape with a dictionary.// |
You do realize that sentence is a work of art don't
you? Very clever, I will steal it and use it as if it were
my own. |
//"Assimilating" by means killing most or all who think of themselves as Ukrainian rather than Russian - is still genocide.// |
It would be. Fortunately no one is doing that. |
//denies that deliberating bombing a maternity hospital is not part of campaign of genocide"// |
Put me on that list, I also deny it. I don't know whether it was being used by the Ukrainian military but I have seen Ukrainian artillery set up in a Ukrainian school yard. And the number of deaths (although every death is tragic) is not what you would get from an attempt at genocide. You want to yell "genocide"? You also want to accuse the US of doing evil things? Take a look at Yemen and you'll find something much closer to that. A rotten apple isn't something to eat, but it's also not strychnine. Calling every rotten apple strychnine would not just be a mistake because it's wrong, but also because you would soon be unable to identify strychnine. |

Well said, Voice. It's like calling the firebombing of Dresden
"genocide".That incident was many things, none of them
good. A massacre? Yes. Murder? Yes. A war crime?
Debatable, but probably yes. Genocide, though? Absolutely
not. It was an attempt to terrorize and demoralize the
Germans into ceasing their attacks. It was not an attempt
to exterminate the German people from the face of the
earth. |
Actually the fire bombing of Dresden was
calculated to do exactly that - exterminate the
entire population, and as such it definetly was a
genocide. The same tactic was used by the USA in
the fire bombing of Tokyo, but here we go
again..... the Putin/Trumpster excuse makers
squabbling over the meaning of a word while poor
people are being vapourised with vacuum bombs
and women in the middle of giving birth a
have their hospital destroyed. How about showing
some humanity and expressing solidarity with
those facing Putin's genocidal onslaught? Put
yourself and your family in their shoes, then see
how that feels. I have artist friends who are there
right now. |
What if I express solidarity and also don't misrepresent anything? Would that be good enough? |
My answer is yes. Yes that is good enough.Putin's (and those who obey him) actions are evil. They constitute multiple violations of international law, and are unconscionable. They are not genocidal, nor can they be reasonably construed as genocidal. |
View the footage in the last link then sit and think
quietly for a while. |
Sorry, not running that many scripts just to see a minute of stuff I've probably seen before. You're confusing "bad thing" with "the worst thing I have a word for" |
I prefer to know what I'm thinking myself without
you or anyone else trying to tell me what that is. I
come here to post ideas and have those ideas
discussed. If I want analysis about myself I turn to
my trusted, respected friends. Try dealing with the
idea itself. Would you help wrap a statue in your
local town/city? |
If I could do so without being arrested for vandalism, sure. I reiterate: // As for the idea, [+]// |
Not for the first time, we see the unintended consequences
of Adorno's "Negative Dialectics"; the effect of that work has
been to produce an impoverished moral vocabulary,
whereby the only way we can say that a person is bad is to
say that they're like Hitler and the only way we can say that
an action is bad is to say that it's like the Holocaust. Poor
old Adorno; I'm pretty sure that's not what he intended. |
Pertinax - You can debate the semantics once the war against Ukraine has been won, and your non-Hitler Putin is under secure confinement, but meanwhile, would you help wrap a statue? |
+ time to donate all our bubblewrap |
Thank you. I believe that communities could really get enagaged with that, and there is no need for the wrapping to be ugly. It could be decorative, creative, colourful and celebratory - everything that's the direct opposite of Putin's war on the citizens of Ukraine. When you're in a community that's under massive sustained attack, it means a lot to see expressions of solidarity being manifest in other parts of the world. I know this from direct experience. |
//would you help wrap a statue?// |
Yes, on the same terms as [Voice]. |
Can we make it into an embarrassing shape of Putin
standing butt-naked in a compromising position?
Maybe french-kissing Kim Jong Un while pleasuring
himself to a poster of Boy George? |
Creative modifications are naturally welcome. |
Now that Putin has been labeled as a war criminal,
the extent of his was crimes need to be examined
through the lens of the criteria of genocide.
[newyorker article in link] |
//Genocide means... acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a ... group// |
By that definition every attempted murder is genocide. |
I think there's a difference of intent, [Voice]. Although, on
the other hand, the particular difference of intent which has
been selected for that definition is, in my opinion, a bit
disingenuous. |
I fail to see the difference. You can slice and dice attributes as finely or as coarsely as you like. |
The facts are simple: Putin is deliberately
targetting and killing civilians to eliminate them
either through death or to cause them flee their
country. If he continues to do this for long enough
there will be none left. That is a genocide and
regardless of his stated objective, that is the
outcome given enough time. As Putin is a bare
faced liar, it actually doesn't matter what he says,
as his actions define him. Attacking a maternity
hospital; bombing a theatre containing a thousand
people, with the words Children Playing written on
the ground outside it in Russian, does the talking
for him. Putin is a war criminal; a genocide taking
place, and invading Ukraine was the complete
opposite of an "act of genius". |
Tell me, [xen], is there a murder you would NOT classify as genocide and why? |
Genocide is about exterminating entire groups of
people as an objective. This is what Putin is
attempting to do. Every male adult in Ukraine is
now armed and fully ready to fight the "genius"
invasion, so Putin needs to kill them all in order to
win, and that's genocide. |
// Every male adult in Ukraine is now armed and fully ready to fight the... invasion, so Putin needs to kill them all in order to win, and that's genocide.// |
Armed and ready? That makes them combatants. Is killing combatants in a war genocide? Also would you mind defining "groups of people"? A family and a town each exhibit unique cultural traits. Is killing a family genocide? A town? |
It's about scale. Putin intends to kill everyone in
Ukraine. Perhaps you can voice your objections to
describing this as a genocide to the War Crimes
court when Putin is under arrest and trial. Putin
will need all the support he can get in the face of
world opinion. We already know one former
president will step up and say his invasion and war
was a "genius" tactic. |
See, I though genocide was about wiping out an entire culture or ethnic group, not about killing more than x people. |
//Putin intends to kill everyone in Ukraine// |
Are you being deliberately obtuse? Failing to condemn (specially on one of multiple charges) is not supporting. |
//That's preposterous// Genocide is never
preposterous, but not recognising it in action is
shameful, and describing its initiation as an act of
genius is so unbelievable that it beggars belief. |

This obsession is unhealthy. Isn't there something at least more contemporary and educational to fixate on? I recommend ship design. |
Hear the latest xenzag? Trump is on record actually
calling Putin a "great man". |
Let this great man search his own heart and
conscience before he accuses anyone of being
a warmonger. |
Don't believe me? Google that quote. |
I might have gotten a fact or two wrong, but that's
a real quote. What kind of monster would appear
to appease
a dictator like that, especially at the beginning of
a war? |
You're the kind of guy who would walk into a bulimia clinic with pamplets for the new "eat anything and still lose weight" diet plan. |
LOL.Hmmm. Has that been done before? I think
you've got
something there. |
