I can outline the goal but not exactly how it would be
done. The goal is to take a book that would normally
take
say 10 hours to read and cut it down to 2 hours.
I don't know how they used to do shorthand, or how
courtroom stenographers did it with those little
keyboards,
but this would
be the audio equivalent.
So let's take Moby Dick's first line. I'll give it a shot:
''Call me Ishmael. Some years ago - never mind how long
precisely - having little or no money in my purse, and
nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I
would sail about a little and see the watery part of the
world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen, and
regulating circulation.
Now read at 2 times speed:
"I'm Ishmael, years ago broke, bored thought I'd sail
the world for adventure."
I have no idea what driving off the spleen and regulating
circulation means so I'd probably leave that out.
So I timed the first reading, regular speed: 16 seconds.
Shortspeak (the verbal equivalent of shorthand) at 2x
speed: about 3 seconds.

There is a kind of genius to this. I had once been intent on finding automatic abstractors, but a better approach might be a tool which simplifies and shortens all of the sentences. |

this to find/create the most condensed version of the lord's
prayer.
