Rust is gathered and mixed with a clear liquid adhesive, then packaged in aerosol spray cans. Good for cars, outdoor furniture, house siding, etc. Gives the appearance of rust without the detrimental qualities generally associated therewith.
Gives you that funky, unpretentious, "lived-in" look,
you know, like if you're too embarassed about how stupid your giant SUV looks, you can put this stuff on it and have a more down to earth image.
Check out the fake, sprayed-on, rust.

If you're too embarrassed about how stupid your giant SUV looks, I would be more than delighted to come around with a sledgehammer. No rust spray necessary. |
The SUV thing was an afterthought application. |
Personally, I like how stupid my giant SUV looks. This is for people who can't handle it. |

For testing purposes in the auto industry, we frequently have calibrated grades of dirt and grime that things like the HVAC system, seals and such have to live through. Some of the nastiest is called 'Arizona Road Dust.' There's also 'Minnesota Road Salt' and others. |
"Arizona Road Dust" gets its nastiness primarily from the people who live there. Whatever they have gets on the dust. |

snarfy: so if I don't like how stupid your SUV looks, I can coat it with rust spray...? |

I imagined the end user being the owner of the property, rather than a vandal, but sure, go for it. I'm parked right outside your apartment. It's the *really* big one blocking the fire hydrant. |

There is a structural steel that is designed to rust to a depth and the rust then protects the underlying steel. Several footbridges over the I-5 freeway around here are made from it. People complained that they were being allowed to rust until it was explained that that was the intent. |

Where there is rust there is the potential for hammerite. :-) |
The stupid ugly monstrosity 40 miles north of me (linky) also has a rusted finish. |
It is horrible isn't it, angel? A great idea gone very badly wrong. |
I think the angel of the north is one of the best bits of public scuplture erected in the UK, nay the world, in the last 20 years. Art is, as always, entirely subjective. |

Nah! It's the wings, goff. They're just so...wrong. |

That may be going a bit far, [shift]. There is, at least, something recognisably artistic in Gormley's piece, it just happens not to be to my (or [DrBob]'s) taste. The same could be said for my other local item of large public sculpture, a representation of a train executed in bricks. It is more artistic than just a pile of bricks. |
I think it is rather beautiful. |
[shift], be advised that it is highly unlikely that Gormley was responsible for the content of the website. Consequently, your attack on his intellectual honesty is based on a limited and misleading subset of his verbal output. He could no doubt expound at great length on the meanings of his work, if asked. |

Saying it's ugly doesn't really help. [DrBob] and I happen to agree with you on that score, but it's a personal opinion, and both [goff] and [his face my] happen to disagree. The fact that it looks as you describe is probably deliberate - the region has a long history of heavy engineering. The 'fact sheet' page mentions the size - well, that *is* the sort of thing that appears on 'fact sheet' pages; discussions of motivation, etc, are not really 'facts'. The website is, remember, part of the local authority site, not the artist's own. |
