How about a drug that has no other effect than to cause limited synesthesia. Hear color, see music, feel tastes, etc. Maybe have a series of drugs, each with a different sense swap.

Fly Agaric (amanita muscaria, the infamous red and white 'toadstool') causes synesthesia, tasting colours, feeling sound etc. Most people think this is a deadly species but there are no known deaths from amanita poisoning. It has been used as a recreational/shaminic drug throughout history. Other hallucinogens like LSD mainly effect the visual experience, but the active psychoactive in fly agaric, muscimol, makes all the senses highly linked. This is the only substance i know of that causes synesthesia. |
