Plot summary of The Terminator: Due to advances in artificial intelligence, machines become "self-aware" in the near future. They are bent on the destruction of the human race. The salvation of mankind rests on the shoulders of one man.

Clearly, these two movies have a lot in common. As my now-estranged roommate, Jared, said "I like the Matrix the first time I saw it ... when it was called the TERMINATOR!" Even with the additional back story in the Animatrix, there is still plenty of overlap between the two very successful trilogies. I propose a movement to unite these long-lost twins.

First, we start with a website (www.terminatrix.org) that fills the gaps in the back story of either tale with the information in the other. For example, the T101 was a robot developed by the ZeroOne nation during the second renaissance, Neo is the grandson of John Connor, and so forth. We'll add plenty of interesting content that can build a cult fan-base.

Next, we start building teaser trailers with interleaved shots from both trilogies. The trailers would play in venues most likely viewed by the key demographic (the website, sci-fi channel, etc.).

Finally, we convince James Cameron and the Wachowski Brothers to team up and build a new trilogy that spans both series in one uber-awesome, mind-bending, billion-dollar-making intercedent. I get 10%.

       No.

Enough crap sequels. Spend the time and the money on making something original and entertaining. It's a shame, both of these worn-out concepts were original and entertaining once. (Well, one of them was, anyway.)

       That's crazy talk.
snarfyguy, Aug 11 2003

Sorry [madcreator], movie/comic/story crossovers are by and large a common thing. I seem to remember "Terminator vs Robocop" being introduced in comic form some time ago. So... both Terminator & Matrix have man vs machine... so did 'Westworld' (hey - now *there's* an idea).

       I've gotta bone this.
Jinbish, Aug 12 2003

I'm going to give this a fishy as well, but for a different reason. Marrying two similar films together is just too easy. At least make it challenging and have two completely different films merged into one story line.

For example, if you consider that Sarah Connor is an Irish name then the following extract, relating the perils of her great, great, great etc grandmother can be made to work...

Scarlett O'Hara: "But the Terminator is out there!"
Rhett Butler: "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn!"

SkyNet Command: "We're sending you back to 18th Century Vienna to take out the great-great-great grandfather of our future enemy. He's a famous musician. Can you suggest a disguise you'd like to adopt ?"

       Arnie: "I'll be Bach."

Gibson's Neuromancer view of The Matrix is still the Platonic Ideal in my mind.

I don't know how it got dumbed down to the movie idea, although I do love the EFX.

And I adore Neo's coat, and own at least two that look a lot like that.

[8th of 7] If I could fishbone annotations...
Detly, Aug 12 2003

Aw, c'mon, [Rods], it's just a fashion statement.
grecosartre, Aug 12 2003

I saw the title and thought it was a crossover of Terminator and a dominatrix.
jonathanhowell, Aug 13 2003

Au contraire [Detly], I think 8th of 7s annotation is the only good thing to have come out of this idea!
RoboBust, Aug 13 2003

No, I'm not allowing you to make poor old Governor Arnie do kung-foo wire fighting. He's too old for that kind of abuse.

And in anycase, cross-overs (even universes as closely tied as Aliens vs Predator) are bound to disappoint - especially when you're talking two sets of very stylistic directors.

Personally, if they're going to make a Matrix crossover I'd like to see Max Hardcore as the One.

       [after reading 8th's anno] Pun-tastic!
DrBob, Aug 13 2003

There should be higher level AIs than the Terminator and Robocop, I think.

Neo's coat isn't leather. Morpheus' is. Neo's is kind of basketweave wool with a Nehru collar.

Fashion is a kind of identity, [sealo]. It's visual shorthand, like hair.

There's nothing cool about either of those movies other than the visual EFX. Certainly not the writing.

As in, "that's not writing, that's typing."
grecosartre, Aug 13 2003

       //Neo's coat - that long black leather-look thing - in my opinion, should've been a cape...//

I am surprised they didn't switch it for a cape in the second movie, with Neo having that superman flying thing going on.

[8th] if I'd been drinking orange juice, I'm sure it would have sprayed out of my nose... bravo!

I have some friends who would doubtless love this idea. That being said, I think it stinks. Each movie is bad enough in isolation without combining them. Personally, I'd like to send the terminator back in time to groin the person who told Keanau that he could act.
madradish, Aug 13 2003

Than Keanau? Hell - my toenail clippings could act better than him.

Probably wouldn't look so good in leather tho.
madradish, Aug 14 2003

And thus [dag] lives up to his moniker.
madradish, Aug 15 2003

Yeah, considering he uses his account page to brag about himself I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.
madradish, Aug 15 2003

       Not that I'm aware of.

Do you have a brother called dope?
