Two cans are connected together by several hundred
strings,
each string representing a pixel.
The sending end has all the little knots holding the
strings
in place arrayed on the "drawing board". When you draw
on this, you hit the little knots and vibrate the
strings.
On the receiving
end, the string is attached to a small
stylus that is positioned against a screen that's covered
with aluminum powder like they put in Etch-A-Sketches.
When the string vibrates, it clears a little bit of the
aluminum powder off the screen making a mark.
So if you draw a circle, all the strings you hit vibrate and
clear a circle shaped array of dots on the receiving end.
When you're done viewing the picture, you turn it face
down
to
erase it by coating the screen with aluminum powder so
you can start again.
For two way communication you'd have a transmitting
and receiving unit side by side on each end.

Etch-a-sketches use strings to move their stylus. An etch-a-sketch with a remote readout would only require four strings to transmit the image at full resolution. (But you may want extra strings for remotely shaking it.) |

Pondering further: I wonder if you could set this up with one of those existing pin boards (where you push your hand in and see an image of your hand made of pushed pins). The pin board would be a ready made stylus array. |

Wonder if you could do one string where the drawing
board has various spacing of very fine ridges that cause
the string to vibrate at different frequencies. Then the
tuned points on the receiving end vibrate sympathetically
with that frequency. Might work but the resolution
wouldn't be great. |
