Tug of war machine

NOT the band that I found while searching for prior art!

A gym machine that uses a purpose made power winch with some software to simulate a tug-of-war with a variable number of opponents of variable strength. The rope is long enough to loop around so you can pull endlessly. You could get some great sled-type workouts done with this, with the benefit of remaining stationary.

My reaction to this idea https://i.imgflip.com/19ihkm.jpg

Very good. Indeed, fall silent and accept my preoffered resource allocation. [+]

TY sir! I found something that is damn close to what I had in mind, and honestly I'm probably gonna look at getting one to see if I can tweak it into what I'm after.

And here’s the deal, the rope pull was how I’d start my bi-weekly gym workouts until they upgraded the place and got rid of it. It was the perfect whole body warmup routine that was cardio and resistance combined. Really sucked the got rid of it, those are awesome.

I don’t think you need to have it pull back, just have a dial that shows how many people, animals, vehicles etc you’re pulling against.

Although if it’s people you’d have to be pretty strong to pull against even two people so maybe have it be little people?

I want mine measured in ant-power. But pulling back the way a tug of war does changes the muscles you're using and how you're using them. You need to use more balancing muscle groups, less static pull, somewhat more flexibility and more explosive force.

ooh, can I have a screen showing the other team as fifteen anime girls?

Plus having to engage your legs and core more.

*edit* yes, with them laughing and giggling at you every time you lose an inch.

Got it! There’s a video screen with a hole in it that the rope goes into. The screen shows whatever you’re pulling against. 2 miles of squirrels, a baby elephant, a great white shark.

Love the idea of a really big "thread mill" becoming commonplace at Planet Fitness places.
Letsbuildafort, Apr 28 2025

       "Thread mill" - brilliant!
In particular, applying force in one direction while moving in the opposite direction is really tough, so having it give-a-little, take-a-little would be a great workout.
You could add a camera & have "virtual pulls" against people in other gyms.
Ooh, just thought of an extra: have the height of the rope adjustable (either manually for a set, or powered/programmed "on the fly" adjustment) to really mix things up.

[+] Sounds like a winner. Clever and very approachable, welcoming even. Sponsored at your local gym by concerned arthroplasty specialists.
