Victim Day
A tribute to all of the victims of major disasters | |
It seems as if every time a major disaster takes place in the United States or some terrible tradgedy happens causing nationwide attention, we want to commemorate it a year later and every year that follows. In the last few months it seems like every week there is a news story where the reporter starts
out by saying, "Remember those who died in ________(fill in the blank)" or "Paying tribute to the victims of__________(fill in the blank)" and before you know it, these rememberances and tributes will become so mundane that they will lose their effectiveness.
So I propose a "victim" holiday which will be dedicated to all those who suffered from 9-11, Katrina, Columbine, the V-Tech shootings, the bridge collapse in Mississippi, any every other nationwide tradgedy.

I think this is just to expand the coverage given in Memorial day. The day is to remember those who died in the service of their country. not just military service. |

it doesn't work that way. unless it can all be shuttled under one heading of 'Korean War' or some such, people will always remember 9/11 on 9/11, for instance. |

you can't squish 9/11 and katrina together, because they have almost zilch to do with each other. on 9/11 americans gather around and feel resentment towards al-qaeda (and perhaps now resentement toward Bush). it's a little hard to feel resentment towards a storm system that died out years ago. |

good point. I guess Katrina will always be remembered on that day. My father was born during a hurricane in Florida. In those days they didn't name the hurricanes so it isn't remembered except as the Daytona hurricane of 1928. |

Actually, I feel resentment toward Bush for both 9/11 and Katrina, their non-prevention and botched recovery. He and his ilk can also be held responsible for shootings and infrastructure collapses. |

Perhaps we could specify, then, that the Victim Day is designed solely to commemorate those who died snivelling, wailing and soiling their undergarments, grubby hands raised limply in an unheeded call for mercy. |

While there are good points to both sides of the issue, one can't take away the personal pain of the loss of loved ones. That's what really counts.

While I will agree that the media ruins everything, but if the rememberances and tributes become mundane and lose their effectiveness, maybe you have lost something in your heart. [ ] |

when has it become more popular to be a victim than a hero? yes, i feel sorry for those that have needlessly lose there lives but to have a day for it? no, you don't have to do anything or be brave to be a victim. let those who have lost someone do what they please, but don't create a victims day. that's like saying to those we honor on Memorial Day "even though you died for our country were going to give the same respect to those died because of something that had nothing related to them." i guess i see this as a slap in the face of those who are honored on Memorial Day. |
