       ?

Is this a local thing? It's not translating here.
UnaBubba, May 16 2012

Let me translate [2 fries]. *Ahem*

A wife-beater is a singlet or tanktop. The habitual wearers of such garments are identifiable by having tanned arms but lily-white torsos (aka "farmer-tans"). The idea here is to invert the effect by having the shirt created of a material which reflects visible light but allows ultra-violet light through - hence tanning the wearer's torso.

The "k is silent" in the Summary is a humourous reference to the deliberate mis-parsing of the word "tanktop" to emphasize the "tan" component of the idea - i.e. "tan ktop"

Next week's lesson in Canadian/Australian translation class will examine why "lucked out" means the opposite thing in each country.

Perhaps the cloth should incorporate fibres from walnut husks.

Maybe the term "wife-beater" was what caused confusion. I could imagine the moniker being less useful in circumstances where

1: every male habitually wears such a garment, regardless of wife beating habits.

2: every male habitually beats his wife, such that the term "wife beater" becomes nonselective.

       3: 1 and 2.
bungston, May 16 2012

       4. The garment in question is normally worn by heterosexual women or gay men

5. Some different garment is normally worn by wife-beaters and so the description of this as a "wife-beater" would cause confusion.

6. This garment is worn by wife-beaters but is also worn just as much by another, very different and distinctive group, such as well-educated, rich philathropists who dabble in poetry-writing (Note that this is a special case of exception 1).
hippo, May 16 2012

The garment in question (a lightweight white cotton tank top sized for men) is usually marketed as, and considered to be by the majority of Western nations, an undergarment, someting worn under button-up sleeved work shirts or dress shirts. However, it is considered by a select portion of the American male populace, known as 'rednecks' or 'hilbillies', and a select portion of the British male populace known as 'Yorkshiremen', to be an acceptable outer garment; these demographics being commonly, if somewhat innacurately, associated with spousal abuse, the garment has become known as the 'wife-beater', QED, ipso quid prono, alto sax.

Aren't those the eldritch lobster creatures from Yuggoth?
bungston, May 16 2012

No, it's my phonetic-spelling version of the Hawaiian Pidgin* word meaning 'do you understand?' (lit. 'you okay?') It's a callback joke to an anno in [Inyuki]'s 'Logish' post.

       * which, AFAIK, has no written form.
Alterother, May 16 2012

sorry, but its baked. (see link) I also think I hear speed (?) made similar tops. I do wish they were more prevalent/easier to buy though.
bob, May 17 2012

I had noticed the term, "wife-beater', coming gradually into usage in Australia and wondered whether it meant a garment or its wearer.

It's what is referred to as a Jackie Howe Singlet. Jackie Howe was a famous shearer, during the late 1880s, in Queensland, Australia. <link>
UnaBubba, May 17 2012

I find the usage of wife beater redundant with tank top as well as confusing.
rcarty, May 17 2012

I don't know how widespread this is, even within the uk, but tanktops of T-shirt material are actually associated with gay men to the extent that they're called "gay tops".

Similar styled garments which have no such connotations are vests (an undergarment), string vests (see: Rab C. Nesbitt) and knitted tanktops (old people).
Loris, May 17 2012

The term 'wife-beater' seems to be going out of style in the NE US, although the garment itself remains as popular as ever.
Alterother, May 17 2012

Sorry about the title ambiguity. [bob]s' link makes this baked, and it will expire in,

Not widely kniwj to exist but suggest a title change to anti farmer tan ktop.
rcarty, May 18 2012

       Deal.
<spits in palm, holds out hand>

No..it'll just go from "why are you talking about wife-beaters?" to "what have you got against farmers?"

       >gay men to the extent that they're called "gay tops".

News to me, as a UK bod. But noticed in Bangkok, when I wore one they try flogging me kiddie porn dvd's not just regular porno dvd's, so I went back to wearing t-shirts again.
not_morrison_rm, May 18 2012

[+] (although I think the original *farmer's tan* was from a regular t-shirt with sleeves) I'm going to investigate that...
...be back in a couple of months.
xandram, May 18 2012

Here it's the "sock tan", as most tradesmen and outdoorsy types wear shorts because of the heat.

That is changing, as OHS rules now require long trousers, long-sleeved shirts and hats, all rated to SPF 50+ or more, to forestall workers' compensation claims for sun cancer.
UnaBubba, May 18 2012

[2 Fries] Can you produce any evidence to support your outrageous claim that farmers are gay and beat their wives?
AusCan531, May 18 2012

If the tank-top fits... you mustn't acquit.

       t'sall I got.

Now how do we identify wife-beaters?
Phrontistery, May 20 2012

       Their wives have black eyes?
UnaBubba, May 20 2012

       Whose wives do they beat?
