There are a myriad of devices you can attach to your home theater system. Among them are a DVD player, CD jukebox, VCR, DVR, digital cable box, XM radio, video game system and more.

Standard receivers are designed to select only one input at a time, but sometimes there are situations where you’d like to mix and match. The most common one I encounter is to listen to music from a CD or radio while playing a video game. In some games sound effects are very important, so I’d need to mix the audio from the game with the music I want to hear in the background. (There are also other situations where this can come up).

I’d like to be able to put the receiver in a mode where it mixes in audio from one source on top of the audio of another for these situations. The relative volume of the two sources should be adjustable.

The super deluxe version would allow you to take advantage of your surround speakers, perhaps putting the music in the surrounds while leaving the other source up front.

Brilliant, almost too brilliant to be on this site...

There's nothing stopping you using an external mixer though.

Xbox baked, on the xbox you can "burn" your own cds onto the hard drive, then later some games allow you to select them as the soundtract.

True, but only a few games allow you to hear that music at the same time you are playing the game. I also own several hundred disks, so it would be tedious to rip everything I wanted to hear. Plus some disks are not rippable.

To my knowledge, burned CDs cannot be copied to the Xbox's HD. I've tried many, and had NO success ...

From the main menu there's a MUSIC option, that lets you do some stuff, but it is not accessible from within all games.

       Correct.

I can already do this with my computer and 5.1 surround sound card. I just go into the configuration and drag the appropriate symbol to the appropriate speakers.

[Freefall] Yes, that solves it for playing PC games, which is an entirely different venue. (Note this idea is posted in product:audio, not computer:audio).

But game playing is just one example I use. There are other uses for this. For example, suppose you want the financial news on so you can see the stock crawl and have the host's voice at low volume, while listening to music of your choice. This would also enable that as well.

I thought of another use: I now have an input on my receiver dedicated to the laptop I usually have on a table in the living room, so I can play MP3s from it. Sometimes it would be nice to listen to music from my CD player in the rack, while still being able to hear Email or IM alerts from the PC.
