Bus Snooker

Liven up the old game

This game is identical to the traditional game of snooker (US note: similar to Pool) in every respect, except that it is played on the top deck of a double decker bus, being driven at speed on a route containing many roundabouts and simulated bus stops. The driver (a neutral) is encouraged to brake and accelerate fiercely at every opportunity (which should present no problem to the average London bus driver).

The table would have to be fastened down. The windows should be blacked out, and dingy lighting provided to accurately emulate the traditional snooker environment.

Other possibilities for bus sports would include ping pong (for the more active) or darts (for the brave).

Being an American, I'm unaware of the intricacies of the game, but wouldn't the accelerations be like tipping the table so that all the balls roll into one pocket?

       I think that's the point.

Oh. I thought this was intended semiseriously, as a way to increase the challenge of the game.

You are crazy man. I like bus, I like snooker but where is bus snooker? Can I play?

       How about bowling?

It would have interesting effects on boxing or karate as well. Imagine trying to time your punches to take advantage of extra momentum when the bus brakes...

       How about fly fishing?

Monocycle basketball would be a bit more challenging as a bus sport and more could join in.

Willie Mosconi (the greatest pool player ever) did a publicity stunt for billiards by playing pool on the top of a double decker bus while driving around Chicago (i think).

In the US, snooker is sometimes known as "bumper pool," right? The table has a handful of knob things bolted in the center of the table. . . ?

Nope. That would be 'Bar Billiards'. Snooker is the one with 15 reds, 6 assorted other colours, played on a table with long sides and small pockets.

If it was your shot, wouldn't you be able to stand around and wait until a red went into the pocket of its own accord? Or would you have an incentive to pot a red quickly before a colour goes in? I can see tactical complexities.
