Precussion is everything.
If you can hit it, it can make a sound.

Pan drums are domed metal precussion instruments, where areas of the curved surface are distinctively marked out, enabling them to have the ability to deliver a range of sounds when struck with the hand or a soft hammer.

Cement Mixer Truck Pan Drum takes this principle and scales it up massively in size. In this case the truck's cement drum has been modified so that it now has a large number of the note defining shaped areas running around the surface of its exterior curvature.

As it contains no cement, only a fraction of the usual power is required, so a small silent motor can turn it without any difficulty.

Two platforms are provided on each side of the drum to facilitate the musicians who stand facing inwards and pound on the drum as it rotates, with either their hands or using padded mallets. Their co-ordinated beats and notes generate a variety of harmonious or chaotic outcomes. The resulting sounds are naturally enhanced and amplified by the drum's convex interior, although for even greater volumes, pic-up mikes linked to an amplifier and speakers can be activated.

Several instruments can be parked together to form an orchestra.

Backyard version takes the form of a small builder's cement mixer.

Nice. I wonder how thick the metal would need to be to get the right frequencies.

You could make some hard rock with this.

That's the "auto" version where the drum is filled with padded rocks that tumble around in response to the rotation, randomly banging on the different sound zones.

I play the steering wheel drum on the way to work and my Jambe when I get home sometimes. The first thing I hear when I listen to a tune is the drums. Then the rest comes into play. Must have been a drummer in another lifetime. Me thinks.

A big fat steel drum shaped bun for you.

Drumming is fundamental. Ginger Baker remains a genius figure for me, as does John Bonham. If you love drums, look up "Lambeg drumming contests" on YouTube. [links]

I heard the song The Spy, by The Doors on the way to work today. We are lucky to still have a steering wheel. Wow. I don't think I had ever heard it before.
