Dropbed

Wakes you up by dropping you

It's a bed designed to wake you up by subjecting you to freefall. This should wake you up suddenly and terrifyingly, inspired by the movie Inception [link] and [whimsickle]'s idea "Terror Clock" [link]. The bedframe has linear actuators of some sort (pneumatic?) in the four legs, capable of lifting the weight of the mattress and sleeper(s), dropping that weight suddenly, and finally catching that falling weight to provide a soft landing. The bed is at the regular height when you get into it and throughout the night, and drops in the morning (when triggered by your physical alarm clock or alarm clock phone app) into the empty under-bed space. If you like to store things under your bed, you can buy a set of leg extensions. With these, the bed will still start at the normal height in the evening, but will raise itself up higher shortly before the alarm time, and then drop back to the normal height, instead of dropping below its normal height.

       So I ask my doctor, I say "So Doc, is Hypnopompic waking right for me?", and after taking tests he says "Depends... you don't need a prescription.", and now I'm not sure what he meant... (+)

       1) It’s not the fall that gets you, it’s the quick stop at the bottom.

       2) Our training instructors - if any of us were still horizontal after reveille - would lift the edge of our cot and drop it. A very short free fall - but see point 1.

       Perhaps "Inception Bed' might be a better title ?

       It doesn't plant ideas in your mind via your dreams. Also, I named it to coordinate with the name of another idea that I've been meaning to post for several years now. Maybe I will today.

       But thanks for the link. I added "[link]" after "inspired by the movie Inception" in the idea body.

       // Starinng […] depite //

       Maybe you'd be feeling more awake right now if you'd been woken up by being dropped.
