What could also be done is simply a person if dropped into the middle of a foreign country without anything but maybe a small amount of the foreign currencey and simply they have to adapt to the new culture and find a way to thrive .... or at least survive

A comparison of the two American versions (NBC vs CBS)of this game, and why you may have wanted to discard your remote control in the 2001 programming season. [jurist, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 21 2004]

Here, I'll fill out just a smidgeon of the other possibilities for you:
Moon
Mars
Ocean
Desert
War Zone
Tijuana (with local water, none of that bottled stuff)
etc. ad nauseum

Sounds like Outward Bound - they take troubled teens and drop them in the wilderness with only survival necessities.

How about halfbakery survivor. A newbie is dropped into ...

This sounds like every one of my trips abroad. I remember being dropped by the tram in the middle of a melbourne backwater at 4am when I realised I had no idea where my apartment was, and my luggage looked very expensive...

I'm about to be dropped into london in a few weeks and I'm sure adventure will abound.

Pretty much baked by UK Channel 4 show "Lost" where three couples are dropped in the middle of nowhere and told to get to Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square. First team back wins a cash prize and the chance to do it all again. A thoroughly entertaining programme, if you like watching people lose their minds in the middle of nowhere.
