Why not dam the gibralata straits

If a barrage was built in the Gibralta straits between Spain and Morroco it would be possible to make use of the high evaporation rate in the Med. If once the dam was built the sluice gates were left shut enough time for a difference of 1 meter to occur between Atlantic ocean and the Med, the Med being 1 meter lower than the Atlantic because of it's high evaporation rate. After that difference had occured the sluice gate could be opened and there would be a constant flow from the Atlantic to the Med.

       Anyway (to return to the original idea) this would still only result in a net flow equal to the current through the straights at the moment. I don't know what that is but I wouldn't have thought it was enough to justify the size of the damn involved, compared to spending the same amount of money on lots of smaller hydroelectric schemes.

       I seem to recall this in a Clarke novel somewhere. IT was mentioned. I don't remember which, 3001, I think. but they damed the straits and then drained all the water. Afterwardsthey used the newly dry land for the excess population and the archeological gold mine it would be. In all sincertiy though, why would we want to play with the Earth's climate. Seems as though it would cause serious problems thoughout the world. beswides what would we do with the excess water. I can understand the hope or a goal of alleveing the plight of drough victims, but that is a lot of water to simply ship.

       Better to build giant turbines below the water and use the force of the existing current to generate electricity. Far less disruptive to shipping, fish, dolphins and European climates.
