There is a lot written about flywheels in cars. Where to put them. Where not to put them. Why they work and how they work.

I'm not interested in that. If I'm going to have a wheel spinning really fast somewhere in the car I want to see it. Better still I want to use it.

The most obvious usage is to make the outer edge into a grindstone, either by milling or adding a nice sandstone veneer. This outer edge should protrude into the passenger cabin. I am now able sharpen knives, scissors and other items of cutlery in the comfort of my own car. Waiting at traffic lights has never been so much fun. As an added bonus I get a nice friendly shower sparks while I'm doing it.

I don't think there is anything in the highway code about using an in car knife sharpener while driving but I might be wrong.

12V_20Fondue I was wondering how we'd sharpen the fondue forks [hippo, Oct 24 2012]

There is a venerable tradition of sharpening things in vehicles http://carryapigeon...ife-sharpening.html
...though I couldn't tell if they do it whilst the vehicle is in motion. [DrCurry, Oct 24 2012]

       Yeah.. I'd imagine that it's a violation. The sparking can be deemed a potential fire hazard.

       This is exactly what I hoped it would be.

       This opens up unlimitless possibilities, including having the prop shaft exposed. With chucks and a replaceable mid-section, you have a full in-car lathing experience available.

       Fold down the back seat and extend the bed into the trunk for those extra-long last-minute turnings.

       If the person operating the lathe is also the driver, does it qualify as a lather-guided vehicle ?

       Flywheels have to spin pretty quick. Not sure I'd want a grindstone moving that fast.

       A CNC machine might be useful too...

       //Lather-guided// Awesome!

       Perhaps the car's interior could come half finished. The gear lever knob starts life as simple block of walnut. It is up to the owner to complete and upgrade their car over time. The quality of the fittings would gradually improve as the driver slowly masters the art of in-car lathing.
