It’s a Small World

1:1000 scale, world feature, theme park

A theme park with natural and man-made landmarks at one-thousandth their actual size would foster appreciation for the size and proportions of our environment. The inquisitive of all ages could enjoy hands-on comparisons of realistic structures and geographical features.

The entrance road to the park would follow between a 4 mile* Great Wall of China and an equally long Nile “river” before coming to 5 inch high great pyramids. The mountain area would stretch from the Netherlands’ highest point, 3.8 inch, to the UK’s Ben Nevis, 4.4 ft, Australia’s Kosciusko, 7.3 ft, Mt McKinley, 20 ft, and a climbable 29 ft Mt Everest showing base camps, highest human dwellings and the highest living plants and animals.

A water area would include a 6 ft deep Lake Baykal, the 4 ft central span of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and the 3 ft Angel waterfall of Venezuela compared to a 1.4 ft Empire State Building. A continental shelf, 8-inch wading pool could lead to a 36 ft deep Marianas Trench open for diving. Information would include deepest human dives in different categories, depths for deep-sea life, a 1-inch blue whale and a 1 ft QE2.

Other interesting structures would include a 9.6-inch Hindenburg next to 4-inch California redwoods, the Eiffel tower at 1 ft and the 1.4 ft Sears Tower.

* All figures are approximate.

XKCD seems to have a lot in common with the HB, except that its author seems to have as many of our thoughts as several of us put together. [pertinax, Jun 18 2011]

I would only hope the urge to step on the *1inch White House* would not become too much for me.

Making the model of the model is going to be darn fiddly.
PeterSilly, Oct 15 2002

Been there, loved it. Bought a realy, REALY, tiny t-shirt.

Would this be constructed on an 8 mile diameter globe or as a 25 mile square Mercator projection theme park? It could be called World world!
TwoSheds, Oct 15 2002

I think that the Great Wall might be a problem. As a very quick, uneducated guesstimate, it seems that it would be somewhere near a centimeter wide/high. Would you need signs to point out that it was even there?
half, Oct 15 2002

TwoSheds: For practical reasons the latter, if the whole world is to be represented.

half: I missed that one. It makes the length even more impressive.
FarmerJohn, Oct 15 2002

[half] on average 3/10 of an inch - high.
po, Oct 15 2002

So, .762 cm. Even smaller than I guessed. At least I got the order of magnitude right. That's better than my usual guesses.

And in this park he had a wall

And I've been thinking that I must be half crazy for wanting to build a scale model amusement park in a corner of my back yard. I think that the [Farmer]'s got me beat by .001 mile.

There is something similar to this outside of Canberra in Australia (link), it's mostly small houses and whatnot but they are working on models of famous buildings. I went there earlier in the year and had fun pretending to be godzilla.

       Ditto.

Does this only apply to size, or could it also apply to temperature, etc.? You might be able to demonstrate just how narrow a range of temperatures humans exist in by placing a model sun (150 degrees celsius) near an erupting volcano (with a metal sphere at a constant 0.9 degrees celsius), the hottest temperature on earth (globe at 0.058 degrees celsius) and the coldest temperature on earth (-0.089 degrees). Perhaps, in order to demonstrate just what humans are capable of, put in an atomic fireball (a white-hot electrical arc that you can feel from several dozen feet away).

I'm not sure whether it would be misleading considering that most of the temperatures would be around freezing, but whatever.
