Knee glides

Take the jerk out of stopping when rollerblading

The trouble with dropping to your knees (with pads on or not...) when rollerblading is that you come to a very abrupt stop and lose control. What if you had roller bearings on your kneepads, so that when you dropped to your knees you glided to a stop...? One knee down and the other foot used as a brake. If you HAVE to stop in a hurry, this seems like a good way. Kind of like a baseball slide, without any skin getting scraped. This WILL work!

Sounds good! A pair of wheels on your knee pads (with shock absorbers) would be very helpful. +

Can't say I have ever had this problem. Don't most knee pads have the kind of hard plastic that slides well along pavements?
DrCurry, Nov 06 2003

try this on the pavements hereabouts, you will stop alright..

       seems a good idea though.

The idea is to stop, but not to flop around like a flounder while doing it. It should reduce the friction between pad and ground. Maybe pants with little roller bearings all over? I once did three turns around a stop sign while airborne, trying to stop. The woman in her car applauded

Have you tried the little rubber thing located behind your wheels?
Worldgineer, Nov 06 2003

Actually, I removed them after flopping around trying to use them... You obviously don't skate like I do, I like it FAST! I have read about a Swiss inventor who has created skates with balls instead of wheels. You can slide to a stop just as if you were on ice! Should come out in a few years.

Perhapse use some sort of ceramic material ... kind of like knee-sliders for motorcycle racers, only for use at slower speeds ... catchy knee sliders suck

How about a skate board suit that is covered in little wheels, so when you fall over, you just glide along, until you slow down, possibly 150 metres from the Skate park......

I don't own any rollerblades - is it o.k. if I still wear the knee glides though - they sound too good to miss out on. I'm from the generation that experienced the skateboard revolution in the UK in the early '80s. At that time the preferred technique for slowing down when skateboarding in the park was to steer off the tarmac path and onto the grass. You would invariably come across some dog muck which would get sprayed everywhere. Now if you added some kind of snow-plough-like attachment to the knee glides I might consider reawakening that old hobby...(+)

Not being a rollerblader, I'd probably only have occasion to use these when attempting to execute an on-knees rock n roll axe-man stage slide at Donnington Monsters Of Rock.

New uses! I thought about one glide on the toe of your skates, too. The best thing about ice skating is that you slow down slowly, so that the energy dissipates gently, and you don't tear flesh...the voice of experience...
