Manbag

A sash designed to hold personal items; a "handbag for men"

The concept of a "man-bag" has been toyed with in the media. This is a carry bag, inoffensive to masculine sensibilities, that allows men to carry their personal items (cellphone, keys, wallet, comb, iPod...etc). Many guys simply put stuff in their girlfriend's handbag.

This is an idea that I have been seriously playing around with for a couple of months. A sash (bandolier) might be a good compromise between form and function - something that is about 4-5 inches wide, sitting diagonally flat from one shoulder to the opposing waist. A number of discreet compartments provide convenient access to cellphone, wallet, pen, etc... and maybe even a slot at the back for an umbrella, which could be "drawn", samurai sword-style. Styles could range from black leather for the executive, to camouflage motif for the rugged individualist and "yoof" markets.

Had one throughout college. A friend carries a small one for his cell phone, wallet, etc. [Worldgineer, Apr 29 2005]

So they did! I had never heard of them, thinking "Baldric" was just a name. Learn something new every day.

It also probably means the idea can't be patented.. :(

       Prior art. Waaay prior.

//alternatively link// Hmm, not sure there'd be a broad market for sporrans.

       It's not a purse; it's European!

Could it have imitation big-ass bullets built in?

I would like a bag for carrying around men. Preferably with a sofa and a TV in it. And a few people to carry it around, too.

       portable hammock.

[Worldgineer] This is a specific design, which hasn't been seen in Seinfeld (or any other show I know of), apart from the vague concept of "man-bag". How is this WTCTTISIWIBNIIWR?
Adze, Apr 30 2005

The general concept of a bag for men to hold things in is quite widely known to exist, including by you. I'd disagree that it having discrete compartments or having different styles makes this novel. This being said, I'll remove the mfd as perhaps I just don't get it.

A fishing vest works well for carrying lots of odds and ends. Just not very fashionable.

Built in bags on your clothes... Oh, pockets.

Very baked as a physical item. As a social idea though, I like it.

       //portable hammock//

I think most hammocks are already meant to be portable.
Pericles, May 01 2005

Hmm, fair point. Maybe something between a hammock and a watdjermacallit, sedan chair. A sedan hammock. With built-in DVD player, of course.

A sash? What sort of a girly idea is that? Pockets! That's what blokes use. Or, if pockets aren't big enough then a cool 'Forbidden Planet' plastic carrier bag is allowed. Sash! Pah!
DrBob, May 03 2005

Absolutely right, [DrBob]! And if you find yourself with too much stuff for your pockets, just change into clothing with more pockets. Wearing a suit to work, plus my rain jacket, I have 14 pockets at my disposal.

Would it be proper for a gentleman to let a lady hold his manbag on the first date?
doctorremulac3, May 04 2005

I keep a couple of delicate and precious objects in my manbag. I don't just let any woman hold it.
wagster, May 04 2005

       she'd need gloves.

I would just like to say to those people who suggested wearing carpenter belts (bum crack as fashion statement?), using the 27 pockets in your trenchcoat, or the pocket of a recently shot marsupial for that matter; you are all philistines. :-)

To the rest, thankyou for your useful comments!

Philistines? Ain't they them guys what's always fightin' with them Isralieolites?

Nah, that's Eye-Rawkies or some such.
