These new video search engines are great but the search doesn't work so well for them -- I'm guessing because they have to be catalogged by humans. How about a chat window that pops up along side a video as you're watching it so you can chat with the other people who are watching it, and then the chat
transcripts automatically become a part of the catalogging. It could be like Wikipedia to aviod vandalism and advertising.
mpeg 7

base jumping video from Google
http://video.google...1067029147374261323 notice how this comes up under "base jumping" but not under "complete f-ing insanity" [JesusHChrist, Apr 13 2006]
talking cat
http://video.google...talking+cat&pl=true comes up under "talking cat" but not "don piano", the most classic line of the vide, which would be all over a chat transcript [JesusHChrist, Apr 13 2006]
http://www.podzinger.com/
Searches podcasts for keywords. Automated, buggy, better than nothing. [jutta, Apr 15 2006]
speechbot
http://blog.searche.../blog/051104-150521 now defunct [JesusHChrist, Apr 16 2006]
Last.fm
http://www.last.fm/index.php I've not really looked into it but I think it uses community ratings to try and match stuff to your preferences. Replace the rating value with a text string and some semantic processing and you have "Online Audio Cataloging" (without the chat bit). [Jinbish, Apr 16 2006]
Google Video
http://video.google...wer.py?answer=26538 It does scan closed captions and text descriptions. [dbmag9, Apr 16 2006]
vBulletin board about google video: vewgle
http://www.vewgle.com/ Not interactive, not google-hosted, not integrated into search. But, hey. [jutta, Apr 17 2006]

By 'chat', do you mean the transcript of what is happening in the video, or actually the viewers talking about the video? |
If it's the latter, I don't think that many chats would actually talk about the picture content, and this could be very easily exploited. |
If it's the former, Google Video already does this. |
I think there's voice recognition technology that's used for real time closed captioning transcription. Even it if only caught some words from the soundtrack, it would be helpful. That's probably what the dealymawhatsit in [jutta]'s link does. |

I like this. It's basically community based meta data. I think that a program called Audio Scrobbler, used on Last.fm, does something like this for audio files (it's kind of Internet radio). |
Your link says google scans closed captions. Half is talking about speech-to-text conversion.
Those are different things. |
OK, sorry. They do come to something similar in the circumstance though. |

Idea is good but there are problems with synchronization of media ( video) Those who are viewing same video may not be viewing same frame as the internet speeds at different ends could be different. So those with faster connection receive video faster and view a different frame whereas a person with slow connection viewing different frame. Technically it is impossible unless you lock all the broadcasted videos as we do in online powerpoint presentation. The video is shown in steps but not like the present streaming video. The synchronization problem is already exist when we try to listen the same song the other is listening. For proof you may try this with any of your friends by listening to launchcast radio in yahoo messenger. |

But integrating chat transcript along with the video is not much of a problem. Google already providing chat in reference with particular email while the sender is online. |
Here the issue is the chat is audio chat or text chat. If it is a text chat indexing and joining is fairly easy at present technological advancement whereas audio chat means beyond my comprehension. |

[JesusHCrist] -- link is exactly what you've been looking for. |
