Self-Pumping Bike

Bicycles are built of cylinders and so are hand pumps.

With the new Self-Pumping bike, an innocuous and small pump lives in a specialized bottom bracket. During normal pedalling, this pressurizes the internal (airtight) cylinders of the bike, with negligible resistance; when maximum pressure is attained, it trickle charges. Upon losing pressure in a tire, or encountering someone else who has lost pressure, or if you need to blow up some balloons or blow dust off of something, you simply pull the head of the pump out from under the seat, extend the durable hose and press a button to transfer air from your bike to anything you like!

I love the idea. Should have been a thing in the 20's.

       Super idea.

The pump could be driven from a wheel during braking, to avoid the drag on pedaling.

That's a whole new idea, you should post it.

Actually another way would be just from the hand brakes themselves. You pull those levers they apply the brakes but also compress an air cylinder to push a bit of air into the tires.

Somebody has to have thought of that.

See linked patent. It may not be the exact embodiment you had in mind but it covers all the parts.

The wind kicked up a paper, written in german, and slapped it across the face of the bicyclist out for a sunday jaunt.

Yeah it is pretty much exactly that. I'd have to find some other mechanism to make it unique. The only real difference is that I would pressurize the entire frame, which would allow for much more capacity.

Be kinda slick to modify it a bit to duplicate the central inflation system of semi trucks (lorries?). The air hose extends from the hub to a coupling and out opposing tubes to the tire. Perhaps each tube could double as a spoke? I suppose you'd need a pressure relief valve too.

Okay, I was considering this at least as early as 95 while daydreaming about compressing air into the framework of my human powered dragonfly while aloft for energy storage.

I think you might be missing a beat with this one.
Not only can you fill your tires at whim... you have all of that compressed air at your disposal to augment strenuous hill climbs and such.

I wanted to store it within lightweight flywheels which would become heavier after they had been spun up to speed for an extra boost.
Extract all of the flywheel energy while they are heavy, and then bleed off the compressed air when they come to a stop.

After just arriving home from a beautiful Fall bike ride, I gotta say I love this even more. Squatting, unscrewing, yanking, etc, oily hands, oily clothes, ohhh please yes.
