I was thinking of little ruts in the tape that would create a noticeable click sound during rewind to know what song it was at, or what section. Maybe for recording tapes, ten or fifteen minute intervals between clicks.

I was thinking more along the lines of the little tapes they use for legal proceedings and collegiate education, maybe even ones where you could make your own ruts for each class or something...

       love the rut you're in.

Tape players for years have had "Seek" functions, that allow them to skip to the next track (by looking for silence on the tape). For even longer, they've had counters that tell you where you are on the tap, time-wise.

If that's no good for you, time to switch to digital.
