Half a croissant, on a plate, with a sign in front of it saying '50c'

This would work fine, except in terms of success.

speedometer/airspeed gauge

Shows both speed over ground and speed through air
  [vote for,

While driving in clear air(no immediate traffic around to give false airspeed, not unsmoggy), different readings indicate more or less air induced drag. Driver can opt to change speed to get better or worse gas mileage. All the electronic contraptions could get involved with the readings from the two gauges but this idea only pertains to the goings on in driver's head.

I assume you're looking for indicated airspeed rather than true air speed. IAS is more closely related to drag.

If the driver notes that the airspeed indicated matches the ground speed indicated on a known calm day he can then judge when the readings differ under other wind conditions. Trial and error will tell him what gas mileage he gets at what airspeed indicated and he can decide to drive at the airspeed that returns the gas mileage he wants. In some instances people don't realize that a headwind is costing them money at their normal speed and slowing down a certain amount will get them back to their usual mileage. Could all be done with computers and cruise control, of course. This is just a simple combined dual reading gauge. Yes, indicated air speed. Analog, naturally.

Used car sales guy: "I admit that probe thingy breaks the streamlining. How bout I knock fifty off the price and give you a couple free floor mats ?"

Croissant awarded if the instruments are calibrated in knots.

If there's a cross wind, a mechanism to angle all four wheels would allow the car to crab, and reduce effective CSA.

//angle all four wheels would allow the car to crab// like a '90s Honda Prelude.

New Benzes will tilt slightly into the crosswind to track straight.

If you get a few more gauges and probe thingies, will I be able to get a more advanced driving license... I'd like and instrument rating.
bs0u0155, Jan 27 2015

Drive the northern end of the M23 on a Friday night and you don't just get an Instrument rating, you get an campaign medal ...
8th of 7, Jan 27 2015

heh, I give you the weird off-camber right hand kink in the M53. You won't have driven it, the only point in the M53 was to get to my brother's house, he's moved now.
bs0u0155, Jan 27 2015

// new Benzes will tilt slightly into the crosswind to track straight// B-52's can operate in a 43 knot crosswind by crab steering the main landing gear up to 20 degrees.

// the only point in the M53 was to get to my brother's house //

For you, maybe. For the rest of the population, the only point in the M53 was to get away from your brother's house.

We'll see your M53 and raise you the Northbound slip road onto the M6 at Junction 15 (Trentham). Very like life in the 18th century; nasty, bruitish and short.

What about the one in Scotland that joins the fast lane?
