Weve all done it, suiting up for a big dive and looking in the mournful eyes of our families best friend. Now theres no need to feel guilty anymore. You can take him with you into an underwater paradise hell never forget.
Imagine the expression on his face as hes yapping excitedly at a conger
eel poking its head out of the orange, pink and blue corals. Cocking a leg against a passing guppy. Trying to sniff the rear quarters of a whale shark. Chasing parrot fish through the long fronds of seaweed.
Seriously though, the device would be constructed from a bubble helmet that could be tightened to ensure it was waterproof. Its possible that you would have to shave a band around the neck to make sure, but even that would be an interesting talking point. Two 5 minuet tanks would be strapped under the stomach.
I dont think it has mass market appeal but it should be possible.
Yip, yip, glug.
Not a new idea
I've seen actual working units [theircompetitor, Jul 02 2005]
Even a patent on it

"What's that Lassie, Timmy's trapped at the surface?"

||Who does he dance the minuet with?
||50 000 fathoms is 300 000 feet - about ten times deeper than the Challenger Deep. Ambient pressure is (would be) roughly 10 000 atm. Huh? (for non-scuba diving readers, an average scuba tank is pressurised to about 200-300 atm, and would be crushed at this kind of depth, if it existed)
||I think he's trying to play off the title of the Jules Verne book, "20000 Leagues Under The Sea." That title may have been okay in French, but in English it requires a comma or something. In the book it becomes clear that they went down under the surface of the ocean in a submarine, then travelled horizontally for 20K leagues--which could be up to 60K miles, depending on whose league is used. A league is a unit of distance for land travel.
But I and a lot of other people thought it meant straight down.
||A fathom, on the other hand, always means depth. The title implies Poochie is descending 56.8 miles, although it doesn't say where this is possible. He is going to be stuffed into that bubble helmet before the trip really gets started, so maybe the full depth won't be needed.
Rover won't be dancing the minuet for long. Nor the lobster quadrille.
||Full fathom five thy doggie lies;
Of his bones are coral made;
Those are pearls that were his eyes;
Nothing of him that does fade,
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange.
Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell:
Bark! Now I hear them Ding-dong, bell.
