Front Door Advertising

Sell your front door for advertising space.

Inspired by AH's 'Paint your door".

Sell your front door for advertising space. Perfect extra revenue for students and the poor alike. And, er, anyone who wants more change in their pocket.

A panel of glass/durable plastic set in the door (as we have now), the inner side of this however, is a flatscreen, and will play anything you upload to it. Upload would ideally be via palm-type device or home computer.

If the technology was cheaper you could have a transparent screen that can be turned off and assumes a window-like guise.

Online you browse the adverts supplied by companies, choose the one you want, fill in your details and have the money paid to your account.

Obviously the company will want to keep tabs to make sure you aren't screwing them, but I'm sure this can be monitored through the web.

Annotation:

I like it. The technology sounds quite expensive though, and if I know students (which I do), their domiciles are no place to put expensive equipment. One party and you're in major debt to the ad company.
Why not regular billboard style posters? [+]

Great - get them to sponsor the rest of your life while you're at it (clothes, car, face...) then your whole life will belong to a big company in return for money. "Why not cover 'X' in advertising" ideas get only one reaction from me, and it smells a lot like fish.

Ian, that's scary. But it's probably going to happen.

IIRC, there were some companies buying ad space on cars. They wanted to vet the cars and drivers, rather than just posting adverts on clapped-out rustbuckets driven by reckless loonies (the bastards turned me down). But beer sellers would probably be happy with any door they could get.

Seems like many college students are already paying to wear logos of famous brands. Or stealing--I'd just put up some advertising signs, designed to be stolen and carried off to dorm rooms.

The idea as described sounds too high-tech, but probably would work.

[baconbrain]- //I'd just put up some advertising signs, designed to be stolen and carried off to dorm rooms.//

Make it a little tricky to take by putting a 'lock' or 'protective' frame around it and you would be sure to have people taking your advertising. Then have the lock reset for the next guy.

I also agree with baconbrain- the idea as is would be hard to implement. People would be taking your door off the hinges leaving you without a door and an advertising contract.

[Ian] Just how many advertisements for bongs, condoms, and cheap beer do you think the industry can support?

[gal] there can never be enough adverisings for said products!

       [wagster] //clothes, car, face//

You wear branded clothing and drive a car with it's name and badge on don't you? Unfortunately dude, you're probably already a walking advert.

Personally, I do my utmost to avoid ANY branded clothing, but I can't rip the name off my car or cover up the wrapper of the chocolate bar I'm eating all the time.

The idea I proposed incidently, could also be used to advertise your own business.

Hmmm... [kuupuuluu], you sound to me like the sort of person who would join me in voting against this. Maybe you did? You wouldn't be the first to vote against your own idea. You're right of course - these days we can hardly help advertising what we use to some extent, but like body odour we have to live with it, not encourage it.

//but I can't rip the name off my car or cover up the wrapper of the chocolate bar I'm eating all the time// a much better idea than selling space on your front door. Extra bone for using the word "dude", in annotation. Incidentally, if you are eating a chocolate bar all the time, how do you sleep, or do anything else for that matter?

[wagster] Oddly enough, you're perfectly right :) I wouldn't vote for this idea, but I decided to put it up here anyway - just because I don't like it, doesn't mean someone else won't .. er .. ok, that's that theory down the drain then! Hehe.

I have been waiting to buy one of those spare wheel covers with "Grand Vitara" on them in big letters, but largely as a result of this thread I thought I'd get a plain black one and let Suzuki do their own advertising.

I agree that there is way too much *noise* out there as it is but I I don't see why you wouldn't want to show off a brand name if you really like a product. I'm going to get the Target logo tattooed on my forehead to let everyone know how much I enjoy Target's high quality products. I can't wait to see the reaction I'll get when I hang out at the shooting club with the guys.
