An attempt was just made on Trump's life. As so many other attempts against so many people the method would have been a gun and the location a speech.

I think it should be possible for a very short range radar packed inside the bottom half of a podium to scan the area in front of it, say zero to twenty meters out. If a bullet (or even a shock wave, if there were an explosion) were incoming explosive charges could propel a set of shields out in the shape of flower pedals protecting whoever were behind it.

So assuming 1500 m/s incoming velocity, if the projectile is detected at 20 m, there would be only 13ms left to deploy the shields. Assuming the peddles need to move 1 m, they would need to be moving at 77m/s, or more likely accelerating during that time to reach a maximum speed of 150m/s.

Note to self: do NOT lean forward over the podium.
