Have remote control steering wheel + pedals, gears etc, along with a flat-screen TV to use instead of windscreen. Then driver can sit in the passenger side (for going abroad), or in the back (if gets car sick in the front, or is scared of hitting oncoming traffic).

Could extend to driving remotely (out of car) - e.g. taxi driver who stays at home, or drives more than 1 car at a time.

good for when your annoying housemates wake you up on a Saturday morning wanting a lift, and you can't be bothered to get dressed.

This would be so insanely cool, you could crash into people and then erase your cars identity so no one would know it was you!

and you could hack into other peoples' cars and drive them around! since all their "windows" are just screens, they won't even know they've been hijacked until they open their door and step out into the Mojave! it'll be great!

I guess the big problem with remote driving is that there isn't really a communications system reliable enough for it ... a one-second glitch can easily kill you.

The technology already exists for military applications. Small drone aircraft are flown by remote for certain types of high-risk recon missions. I suppose that it won't be long before some of these drones start carrying bombs, too. The biggest problem is that the available radio spectrum isn't wide enough to let this technology become widespread in consumer applications such as automobiles. Robust high-definition video, audio, and control links take quite a bit of bandwidth.

The drones are already carrying ordnance (linkies)
