A different film each time you watch

Film-makers generally shoot multiple takes of each shot, and the editor chooses one to use in the finished film. Not always the best take is used, it essentialy boils down to creative or subjective choice. However, if all the alternative takes were included on a BluRay disc, the player could automatically choose a random take for each shot, making the film slightly different each time you watch it. This could even be done with old films, by going back to the archives and digging out all the old takes to include on a new release of the film. Imagine watching Star Wars with takes you have never seen before! "You are not looking for these droids!"

As a filmmaker, I want my audience to see exactly what I want them to see, and many many hours go into ensuring that the movie is perfect (as far as I'm concerned). If I don't use a take it's because I don't think it's good enough, and why would I want my audience to see a crappy movie with my name on it?
DIYMatt, Jun 23 2010

You do your own editing Matt?

DIYMatt, Jun 23 2010

ok, did you ever think "gee I wish I could use both takes, they're both so great..." Well now you can!
simonj, Jun 23 2010

       Nope, never thought that :)

That happened once already to me. Once.

Surely this is baked, albeit in reverse, by the trendency to make the same film several times over and release it with suffixes II, III, IV, The Return, The Retirement, The Resurrection, etc?
MaxwellBuchanan, Jun 23 2010

This would be awesome for 3D films like toy story, shrek or finding nemo. You could pick a character and watch through their eyes. It would not require multiple takes. The only requirement would be that the world is complete - some characters may accidentally see things that are outside of the 3D environment.

We are still waiting for "The Madness of George I", "The Madness of George II", "The Madness of George IV" and - presumably - "George V - Ressurection" and "George VI - The Quickening".

I thought the Madness of George I played in 1988 and II came in 2000?
RayfordSteele, Jun 24 2010

I like it. As a crew member, more of my work would get seen by someone sometime other than the editor and director!

But taking this seriously, a decision would have to be taken about whether to leave in all takes of every shot - including the ones that are cut before they complete or are just not very good - or only a selected set of alternative 'good' takes. I guess the hardcore completist fan might prefer the former but anyone sane would prefer the latter.
jonball, Jun 25 2010

I think this might have a beneficial effect for film editors, who have a massive impact on the finished product but who generally don't get much credit. With such a setup, the benefits of having a good editor would be immediately obvious in a "here's how bad it could've been" sort of way. +
moomintroll, Jun 25 2010

Brilliant. You can also do this with ebooks.
