Mini Buffalo

Minature Buffalo; The Great American Pet

Miniature Buffalo (ala miniature horses) could easily become the great American pet. Put a mini-baler (a subsequent halfbaked idea) on your lawn mower to feed it for free. Get the kids to mow the lawn by telling them it's part of having a pet! Or put it on a leash and let it 'mow' the lawn (and fertilize it!). Their fur is highly insulating (they often have snow on their backs). But it's hard to harvest because of their size and strength. No problem with the mini's.

Just develop a buffalo porn industry, and sooner or later you'll have midget buffalo.
Custardguts, Jan 21 2008

Almost, but not quite. And valid none the less.
8th of 7, Jan 21 2008

Sorry, couldn't help it. If you want it gone, just say so.
Custardguts, Jan 21 2008

       Buffalo burgers, yumm.
normzone, Jan 21 2008

Can we stampede a bunch of them over the curb?
lurch, Jan 22 2008

Just be careful how mini you make them, [lurch], or you could have your very own tiny version of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump.
Canuck, Jan 22 2008

Make them 'OO' scale so they look good next to my train set.
hippo, Jan 22 2008

I'm trying to think of the British equivalent?

Although, I was birthed up in Canada so a mini herd would be kinda cool. I'd just have to watch my step, I imagine they'd be kinda crunchy to the foot.

Hey, I could make buffalo toe socks.
skinflaps, Jan 22 2008

Just imagine sitting back in a deck chair with a cool beer, watching the massive herds of mini-buffalo on their annual migration from one side of your garden to the other...
hippo, Jan 22 2008

..the Jack Russell would love it.
skinflaps, Jan 22 2008

Alternatively, you could just glue horns on hamsters.
marklar, Jan 22 2008

Yes, but imagine the constant, tiny honking .....
8th of 7, Jan 22 2008

No, hamsters, they're the fluffy ones, you're probably thinking of geese.
marklar, Jan 22 2008

       Brilliant!
vincevincevince, Jan 22 2008

Part of an animal's resistance to cold comes from its bulk. Shrink the buffalo down, and you may well lose its storied resilience along with its size.
DrCurry, Jan 22 2008

       Make em mini tuff.
skinflaps, Jan 22 2008

       // you're probably thinking of geese //

No, surely the horns on the hamsters would honk ? What other noise would they make ? Surely not hamster klaxons, that would be going too far ....
8th of 7, Jan 22 2008

[8th of 7] Do you really think I didn't get what he was saying?

Anyway, it was a bad idea, I wouldn't want a stampeding herd of horny hamsters.
marklar, Jan 22 2008

Wait. I thought mini buffalo already existed? I always get their wings at the bar.
Noexit, Jan 22 2008

They're not buffalo, strictly speaking. The Buffalo is the larval form, which then turns into a pupa, and then the winged form of this extraordinary creature hatches out, from which we get what are called "Buffalo wings".
hippo, Jan 22 2008

Thanks for the information [hippo]. I didn't realize their life cycle was so complicated. And I live in Oklahoma.
Noexit, Jan 22 2008

More prosaically, buffalo wings come from Buffalo. I was very disappointed when I found that out.
DrCurry, Jan 22 2008

Buffalo have wings ? Like flying monkeys ? EEeeeeeeewwww....
8th of 7, Jan 22 2008

       //buffalo wings come from Buffalo.//

Well, they don't necessarily, but the serving style originated there. Like Hamburgers can come from anywhere. Or Cheddar cheese.
angel, Jan 22 2008

Hamburgers come from New Haven. Allegedly.
DrCurry, Jan 22 2008

And there's no Sanity Clause .....

All that junk inside that trunk?

       I shall call him Mini-taurus.

The most fascinating thing about buffalo and other migratory cattle is their use of tornadoes to travel great distances.
marklar, Jan 23 2008

I thought that they travelled via UFO traction beams.

What if this ends up starting an underground miniature buffalo fighting society?
Cid Pablo, Jan 24 2008

I doubt they'd get hurt, they wouldn't have the momentum. It would be very funny to watch them rutting.
marklar, Jan 24 2008

How many buffaloes can you fit in a mini?
pertinax, Jan 24 2008

       1) You do not talk about Rut Club.
2) You do not talk about Rut Club.

//The most fascinating thing about buffalo and other migratory cattle is their use of tornadoes to travel great distances.//

I've seen this. It's beautiful and terrifying at the same time. The buffs float blissfully, at least as blissfully as possible under the circumstances, while they chew their cuds and swat flies with their tails. You get the impression that they have no idea what's going on, yet there is clearly some pattern of organization at work. But damn, the mess they leave behind.
Noexit, Jan 24 2008

Clearly Mr. Winnebago was wrong when he thought structures of wood and aluminum might deter the buffalo and their swirling means of transport.

I bought some bison burger last night, and the marketing slogan on the label was "America's original red meat".
normzone, Apr 19 2011

       Wouldn't a mini-buffalo be a picolo?
MaxwellBuchanan, Apr 19 2011

If this isn't the name of a public hair style, it ought to be!
bob, Apr 20 2011

Would these not be Bison? Either way tis an excellent idea, and I want one NOW!

If they were to be called Buffalo, and they had very short legs would they be known as Buffalolows?
xenzag, Apr 20 2011

I am reminded of the South Paek episode where they had the idea of making a mini elephant that you could keep as a pet. Now THAT would sell!
EdwinBakery, Apr 20 2011

I think the mini elephant was from Jurassic Park (the book, not the movie).
MaxwellBuchanan, Apr 21 2011

Absolutely perfect! I've always wanted a pet bison. This is in the same vein as the micro-pig, but probably a smidge more difficult to achieve. [+]
