I am not ready or eager enough to try it out myself and because I don't know how, it would be the death of me, but still, I am curious. Eventually my curiosity will be satisfied, as will yours.
So in addition to a weighing mechanism on every hospital bed (They say you loose 21 grams on the moment
of death), we place one of the 52 known playing cards. The joker doesn't count. The patient cannot see the card unless he or she, or indeed it, dies, and has an outer body experience. Upon revival the person who had a near death experience can tell what the card is.
This would prove wether or not the nde is caused by the brain or if the person really left their body.

Firstly, if I were a patient, and you told me: "Hey, Jutta, in case you die, try to get a look at this here playing card", I would be delighted. Seriously. What a goofy thing. |

But a single card wouldn't realy prove anything. Knowing what the card is in a statistically significant percentage of cases above 1/52, without selecting which cases to report after their outcome is known, in a study set up to prevent communciation of the desired results to the subject, would prove something, although that something may either be "the protections against communication were insufficient" or "let's abandon our existing model of physics." (You probably know by now what my money's on.) |

I like the experiments that seem to work at first, then you tighten security, then they stop working - that at least says something about the means of communication. But by that time, fans of the supernatural have lost interest and moved on. |

For spiritualistic things like this, I would expect tarot cards to be far more effective. Also, there's 78 cards, so the chances of getting it right by guessing are lower. For better control, two or three cards could make rather large odds of guessing... if you stipulate that they must guess all in the correct order... |

BTW the loss of 21 grams pretty closely correlates to the contents of the rectum and bladder, which are evacuated when the muscles relax upon death. |

While going through a tunnel into a bright light sounds like a transferred memory of chldbirth, I have always been intrigued by the common reports of meeting relatives and friends who are already dead. |

Is that an experience generated by our cultural expectations of an afterlife, or are our cultural expectations of an afterlife generated by such near-death experiences? (I suspect the latter, whether or not the experiences are indeed supernatural.) |

There are some scientists who start to think of the brain not as an origin of consiousness but as a receiver of it. Considering this you could form a whole new idea about death, afterlife and everything. |

In one report, a fellow shuffles his "52 cards," has an OBE, and sees a ten of diamonds. But in reality, it isn't a ten of diamonds, it's a joker. The next card is a ten of diamonds, though, so he says this as a success, as the joker doesn't count. Which is typical. Even when the tests fail, people find meaning in them. |
