if your gonna be an addict might as well mix it up little

the social benefit here is accelerate the process of addict extinction. Smoke what you get to Smoke!

I liked this up until the mean spirited extinction part.

the best part? you have a problem with the best part.
vfrackis, May 13 2009

I don't understand this. Is this some sort of puritanical rant, or is there a joke involved? I'm sure I'd find it very amusing if only I were clever enough to understand the irony and so- phis-ti-cated humour involved.
MaxwellBuchanan, May 13 2009

no puritanical rant here Max i just have contempt for people that smoke?

so here I offer a product much like that which they are addicted to

the butt hopper makes destroying yourself as slowly as possible and getting attention a little bit more fun.

You deleted my annotation - I was wondering what might motivate a smoker to opt for the fag-pack tombola when they could just ask for their preferred brand directly.
zen_tom, May 15 2009

The automata dispersing brand specific cigarettes would probably be replaced by ones that still disperse brand specific, but with a 1:25 chance to get punched in the face, or something.

       who deleted your note?

motivation equals you might get to try a brand you wouldn't normally ever choose to smoke on your own.

also a Butt Hopper Face Puncher i like that too

[admin: The halfbakery itself had no record of your annotation, zen_tom - blame browser/website, not vfrackis.]

Ah ok - I could have sworn I'd posted - but do remember having browser issues yesterday - then again, maybe I just dreamed it - apologies vfrackis for the false accusation.

I think he has a point about inconsistency possibly making it easier to quit entirely. Anything that interferes with the habitual components of the addiction will help with the "extinction" phase of kicking. Including a few duds might also help.

//i just have contempt for people that smoke? // Why is that a question?

And, as Zen Tom said, why would I buy this when I can simply buy my chosen brand and calmly raise my middle finger to you?
MaxwellBuchanan, May 15 2009

[WcW] - That may be true (it probably is) - but (to continue on the point that [MaxwelB] just picked up on while I was typing this) if we're talking about an optional distribution channel with a built in form of 'static' - then a person is going to have to make a strange personal decision to continue using that faulty distribution channel when more usual ones are still available - after all, if they wanted random cigarettes, there are other randomisation options available to them, and if they don't, they can still go to a shop that hasn't adopted the tombola.

The same thing goes for those shops that occasionally punch you in the face, it wouldn't take long before people learned to buy their cigarettes in places that eschewed the punching device.

An analogous situation might be going to the petrol station and filling it with "mystery fuel" which may, or may not cause your car to break down - the expected effect being the reduced use of your car.

I can understand that it is a good idea to cause people to stop smoking, but I don't think this one is going to be a winner on that measure of success.

It does sound like fun though, and might be better suited as a POS device for more "fun" products - for example, pic'n'mix sweets - I bet kids would love a tombola type dispensing device, and you might be able to offload more sweets, than if you allowed them to make their own choices as they tend to do at the moment.

A gob-stopper machine that looked and operated like one of those lottery-machines would be quite attractive too.
