Robot world cup now.

Why wait until 2050?

I read that some guys hope to build robots that can win the world cup in 2050. That's fine, but I could build a roboteam today that would capture the cup.

There will be two throwers-in, each on rails on one sideline. Two stationary corner kickers, for obvious purpose.

The second to last player will be a goalie, made of solidly mortared bricks and a motion sensor. This goalkeeper will be constructed in place, across the entire mouth of the goal. When the motion sensor detects an impact, a recording of mocking laughter ensues.

The final player is necessary only in the shootout that follows the scoreless game. On the robots turn, he simply boots the stationary ball in the direction of the goal, possibly at several hundreds of miles per hour.

With human goals impossible, the match should eventually go to the robots.

Sports are the natural evolution of the earliest sport, wich was fighting. It is only natural that Robot Battle type competitions should evolve into this.

The brick wall robot needs to be capable of some sort of 'goal kick' in order to restart play should a human player miss the goal entirely.

       Other than that, brilliant.

Oh, right, if the offense kicks it out, it's not a corner kick, is it?

The problem is, this team will finish the group stage on 3 points... if two of the other teams both win against the fourth team, and draw against each other, then they will both finish on 4 points and qualify.

At least it will be more interesting than the current version of soccer.

[MikeOliver], good point. Not all tied games go to penalty shootout.

These rules were obviously designed by the white man to discriminate against the iridescent silver man.

Hang on, you mean the German team *isn't* made up of robots already?
Mr Phase, Jun 20 2006

Introduce another robot player that is programmed to scoot around the field randomly, and whenever it detects proximity (say within 1 metre) of an opposing player it falls over and writhes around in agony for a period of time.

Sooner or later a penalty will be awarded and the robots could then clinch a gritty 1-0 victory, thus progressing to the next round.

       Don't we already have those?
